Despite delayed start, Linda Cobano has become Maryland field hockey’s biggest offensive threat

Maryland field hockey midfielder Linda Cobano found out from across the world that she was named the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week. The transfer from Hanover, Germany, received a text from her mom with a tweet announcing the honor on Monday afternoon. She had back-to-back games with two goals in wins No. 10 Princeton and No. 18 Rutgers, but was still completely taken by surprise by the news.

Nathalie Fiechter could be the next impact international player for Maryland field hockey

Nathalie Fiechter, a native of The Netherlands, was eager to play field hockey at the collegiate level in the United States, so she sent her scouting video and a couple of emails to various schools overseas. She didn’t know much about NCAA field hockey, but she did know three powerhouse programs: Maryland, Duke and North Carolina. So it was a pleasant surprise when Maryland head coach Missy Meharg and her staff were the first ones to respond back to the incoming freshman. “As an international,

Maryland field hockey crushes St. Joseph’s, 4-0, in first round of NCAA Tournament

In the 32nd minute, redshirt sophomore forward Mayv Clune crossed the ball into the middle of the circle, where a diving junior Brooke DeBerdine reached her stick out and poked it into the back of the cage. DeBerdine’s goal shifted the tides after two scoreless quarters, propelling Maryland field hockey to find the back of the cage three more times en route to a 4-0 victory over Saint Joseph’s in the first round of the 2019 NCAA Tournament. “We were off our game actually in the beginning,” hea

No. 2 Maryland field hockey turns to familiar faces before focusing its attention on postseason play

With postseason play beginning on Friday, No. 2 Maryland field hockey didn’t have any scheduled games for this past weekend. But the Terps didn’t want to have a weekend off, so they played against some familiar faces. The Terps welcomed back a ton of Maryland field hockey alumnae this weekend, including members of the 1999 National Championship squad. The 1999 team was celebrating the 20th anniversary of championship, which was head coach Missy Meharg’s second of seven titles.

Madison Maguire’s hat trick leads No. 2 Maryland field hockey past Michigan State, 5-1

Senior midfielder Madison Maguire kicked off Maryland field hockey’s senior night with a bang. In the sixth minute, she secured a pass inside the circle from sophomore Bibi Donraadt and slapped a back handed shot past Michigan State keeper Jade Arundell. But Maguire wasn’t done yet. In the opening minutes of the second half, fellow senior Kelee Lepage found Maguire on the far side of the circle, where Maguire had an open shot on goal to make it 3-0. To cap off a memorable senior day for Maguir

No. 4 Maryland field hockey launches late comeback to defeat No. 10 Princeton 4-3 in OT

With seven seconds remaining in overtime, No. 4 Maryland field hockey was awarded a penalty corner to try to seal a victory against No. 10 Princeton. Midfielder Linda Cobano took the initial shot and it was blocked by Princeton goalkeeper Grace Baylis. But with the clock winding down, defender Hannah Bond flicked the deflected ball into the back of the cage for a buzzer-beating victory. The referees didn’t initially call it a goal, but once they overturned their decision after a replay review,

No. 3 Maryland field hockey vs Penn State preview

After a perfect 3-0 performance last week, Maryland field hockey is back to being the No. 3 team in the nation. The Terps had an impressive stretch, picking up two shutout victories over Towson and James Madison, as well as a thrilling shootout win over then-No. 6 Virginia. In addition to the great team showing, senior goalkeeper Noelle Frost was also awarded for her fantastic efforts throughout the week. The veteran posted 10 saves and the aforementioned pair of shutouts.

No. 4 Maryland field hockey records third shutout of the season in a 4-0 victory over JMU

After taking nearly 38 minutes to score against No. 6 Virginia on Friday, No. 4 Maryland field hockey wasted no time on Sunday against James Madison. Just over a minute into the game, the Terps drew a penalty stroke. Unlike Maryland’s first two penalty strokes of the year that were taken by junior captain Bodil Keus, sophomore midfielder Riley Donnelly, who is typically used as a defender for the Terps, got the nod.

No. 4 Maryland field hockey weekend preview: Terrapin Invitational

After picking up a dominant 5-0 win over Towson on Wednesday, Maryland field hockey is looking to keep the momentum rolling this weekend. Not only did the Terps pick up a commanding victory, but they also got the chance to rest a lot of starters in the game by rotating in 21 different players. No. 4 Maryland is hosting the Terrapin Invitational, where it will compete against No. 6 Virginia and James Madison. Other teams playing in the tournament include Towson and American University.

Noelle Frost making the most of her starting opportunity for Maryland field hockey

With Maryland field hockey up 8-0 against Towson in 2017, head coach Missy Meharg decided to let her younger players get in on the action. Goalkeeper Noelle Frost, then a sophomore, trotted onto the field for the first time in her career. She didn’t see time the year before as a freshman, and that offseason, then-junior Sarah Holliday had won the starting job with more experience under her belt. Frost didn’t have to face any shots in the remaining 13 minutes of that, but it was a big milestone.

Maryland softball had its moments in 2019, but it was another losing season

Maryland softball picked up 20 wins this season, its most under head coach Julie Wright, but enters the offseason on a low note after finishing in last place in the Big Ten. The Terps were 16-12 entering conference play, but went 4-19 in the league and closed the season on an eight-game losing streak, going 20-31 overall. Maryland did finish the season with an improved RPI ranking of 124th compared to last season’s 172nd, but there were still plenty of disappointments. Coming into the season, M

Maryland comes out on top in an offensive shootout against Northwestern

The last time Quinn Lavelle pitched against the Maryland Terrapins, he coasted his way to a complete game shutout for a 4-0 victory. However, this game came last year. On Friday, it was a completely different story for Lavelle. With a 4-1 lead in the fourth inning, the Terps recorded six consecutive hits, which accounted for five runs. With runners on second and third, senior AJ Lee ripped a double into left field plating Cowles and Alleyne.

Maryland surrenders six runs in the eighth against Northwestern, putting the game out of reach

With runners on second and third, a ground ball hit to freshman Ben Cowles threw it to home to prevent the go-ahead run from scoring. In a play that looked like the runner was out, he was called safe, giving the Wildcats a 8-7 lead. After the play at the plate, the game got out of hand very quickly. A few batters later, junior Alex Erro belted a three-run homer to extend their lead to 12-7. The Terps let the inning get away from them a bit and were not able to recover. Maryland’s offense had a

Maryland softball swept at home by No. 22 Michigan to end season

Maryland softball was swept by No. 22 Michigan over the weekend to finish off the season. The Wolverines offense was too much for the Terps to handle, and on the other side of things, Maryland couldn’t pick up the big hits when it needed to. Michigan clinched the Big Ten regular-season title with the sweep. The Terrapins, meanwhile, finished the season with a 20-31 record, going 4-19 in Big Ten play, which wasn’t good enough to reach the 12-team Big Ten tournament.

Maryland softball salvages 1 of 3 in weekend series vs. Penn State

Maryland softball committed too many mistakes this weekend, and Penn State was able to take advantage. After a couple of games with quiet bats and defensive mistakes, the Terrapins cleaned it up for the series finale to cap off a 1-2 weekend. Maryland now moves to 20-23, with a 4-11 record in conference play. Defensive miscues hurt the Terps in the first game of the series, as Maryland committed four errors.
